Embrace the American, Leave the Ugly at Home!
June 27, 2008

Do you love to share your political views with the locals you meet while traveling? Do you think that people in other countries should do everything the American way? Does your voice tend to get as loud as the print on your Hawaiian shirt? If so, then you might be an “ugly American.”
The concept of the ugly American has existed ever since an increasing number of ordinary, middle-class travelers began exploring the world over a half-century ago. Now, an organization called Business for Diplomatic Action, concerned by an apparent rise in what it calls “negative stereotypes about our collective personality,” is hoping to clean up the image of Americans abroad. The group has published a set of guidelines for travelers, the World Citizens Guide, that suggests proper ways of behaving when visiting countries outside of the U.S.

Quarter of EU homes use mobile phones only: survey
June 27, 2008

An EU-wide survey of 27,000 households has revealed the emergence of new consumption patterns in telecoms services in Europe. Technological progress and competition have brought more choice to European consumers as almost a quarter (24%) of households have given up their fixed telephone in favour of mobile phones while 22% of them are using their computer from home to make phone calls over the Internet.
In an increasing number of Member States, European households are using wireless access to connect to the Internet, via mobile or satellite networks. Meanwhile, 29% of European households buy bundled telecoms and media packages, an increase of nearly 10% since last year.
Nevertheless, the top priority for consumers in this fast evolving environment remains the quality of services.
The key findings of the survey:

GPS on Your Mobile!
June 27, 2008
Very soon, the most common phrase transmitting through mobile phone networks will no longer be “Where are you?” but “I see you.”
While satellite navigation via Global Positioning System (GPS) have been helping earthbound humans to visualize and plot everything from U.S. military movements to lost hikers since the 1970s, GPS and other mobile location-based services (LBS) have only recently begun to infiltrate our personal handsets.

EU strikes deal to cap airline emissions
June 26, 2008
European Union lawmakers agreed to cap airline emissions as of 2012, EU officials said Thursday, ending an internal deadlock over draft legislation that the United States opposes and may cost the industry billions of dollars.
The accord by European Parliament and government negotiators adds EU and foreign airlines in January 2012 to the European emissions-trading system, which imposes carbon-dioxide quotas on businesses and requires those exceeding their limits to buy permits from companies that emit less. The plan covers flights to and from airports in the 27 countries of the EU, said three officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because national governments had yet to be informed of the agreement.
Europe wants to expand emissions trading to curb carbon dioxide, the main greenhouse gas blamed for higher world temperatures, rising sea levels and more frequent heat waves, storms and floods. Airlines account for about 2 percent of global carbon dioxide discharges.

EU plans new push to cut mobile charges
June 26, 2008
The European Commission plans to use new administrative powers to push national regulators to lower the fees that mobile operators can charge each other to connect calls between their networks. Much of the savings would be passed on to consumers.
The recommendation, if adopted locally, would reduce the charges by an average of 70 percent within three years, the commission estimates. Industry analysts say much of the savings would be passed on to consumers in lower per-minute calling charges or larger bundled packages of free minutes.
The commission’s proposal, obtained by the International Herald Tribune, does not estimate the amount of potential savings for consumers, but analysts say it could be greater than those generated by Reding’s move to reduce roaming charges. The commission has said those caps could cost operators €2 billion, or $3.1 billion, out of the €5.8 billion they collect annually in roaming fees.

Worldwide Mobile Gaming Revenue to Surpass $4.5 Billion in 2008
June 25, 2008
Worldwide mobile gaming revenue is on pace to total $4.5 billion in 2008, a 16.1 percent increase from 2007 revenue of $3.9 billion, according to Gartner. While mobile gaming revenue will continue to lag behind other value-added entertainment services - such as music and adult content - the market still has much potential.

The Asia/Pacific region (including Japan) represents by far the largest market for mobile gaming, with end-user spending forecast to total $2.3 billion in 2008 and reach $3.4 billion by 2011. The mobile-game market has outshone the PC and console game market in the emerging territories of Asia largely because of the low penetration of PCs compared with that of mobile devices. India is expected to lead among Asian countries in terms of total mobile gaming revenue generated, with the 2007 figure at approximately $80 million. This is forecast to reach $450 million by 2012.

The mobile gaming market in Western Europe is expected to grow from $701 million in 2008 to $862 million by 2011. The North American market is projected to grow from $845 million to approximately $1.2 billion in 2011. The gap between North American and Western European mobile-gaming revenues is expected to widen over the forecast period as more users in North America adopt mobile data services in general.

Shopping via Cellphone Slowed by Security Fears
June 25, 2008
Nielsen Mobile, which tracks cellphone trends, released a survey of 30,000 wireless customers last week which found that 9.2 million mobile phone users in the United States — or about 3.6 percent of the total — have used their phone to pay for goods and services. Men are more likely than women to use their phone to make purchases, particularly those between the ages of 25 and 34 years old.
The number of mobile shoppers is expected to grow in the coming years. Nearly half of all consumers who use their phones to transmit data, such as sending text messages or surfing the Internet, say they expect to make a mobile purchase in the future, Nielsen learned. Already, 6.5 million mobile phone users said they have used text messaging to purchase items from retailers or other service companies.
Security remains a concern, however: 41 percent of the consumers who transmit data said security was the reason they didn’t buy things via their mobile phone. And 21 percent said they did not trust that the transaction would be completed.

Mobile phones could save airlines $600 million!
June 23, 2008
The airline industry could save over $600 million within the next few years if it learns how to exploit the new features in high end mobiles. According to airline IT company SITA, mobiles’ location awareness could be used to track passengers within airports and send messages to their phones to help them get to their gate on time, cutting flight delays and saving millions.
Mobile phones could also become “personal travel folders”, says SITA, holding a passenger’s boarding passes, baggage tracking information and payment data and maybe even visa and biometric information.

A Phone that measures CO2
June 19, 2008

Blue Telephony and CPS Group Italia have just announced that they are working together to produce phones that can sense and display the levels of CO2 in your vicinity.
I’m guessing that Blue Telephony will be producing the handsets with CPS providing some of the extra technology. The press release talks about “integrated sensor technologies” so it looks like CO2 emissions are just the first things that this new breed of devices will be able to ‘sense’.
This sounds really interesting and will be useful for people with asthma or if you’re worried about your kids breathing in the city smog. I suppose you could measure whether the levels are going up or down in your favorite locations – especially if it was linked to location based tagging. Other applications for the sensors could be tracking pollen levels for hayfever sufferers or even UV rays.
If the technology gets put into phones that look cool as well then it could be a winner.

Cash in hand: why Africans are banking on the mobile phone
June 19, 2008

A wonderful and thorough article from The Guardian on how cell phones in Africa are revolutionizing the way money circulates.
“For consumers in developed markets, using a mobile phone for banking services is a smart add-on to a bank’s branch network. But to people in the developing world, the arrival of mobile banking - or m-banking - is potentially revolutionary.
“If money is an economy’s lifeblood, improving its circulation plays a critical role. Many Africans living in rural areas, for instance, rely on money sent home by members of their family who work in towns and cities. But getting that cash to a village that could be hundreds of miles away is a tricky business. In Kenya, for example, workers in urban areas hand wages over to bus drivers, who promise to stop off at the worker’s home village en route to their destination.
… Services have sprung up that let people transfer cash by text message to other mobile phone users and give Africa’s vast number of “unbanked” their first access to financial products. Instead of using a bank branch, these services rely on local retailers who already sell mobile top-up cards.”

The “Great Unbanked” to Drive the Mobile Finance Market
June 17, 2008
A new report from Juniper Research is forecasting that over 41 billion mobile financial service transactions will be made by the end of 2011. The key drivers for these transactions will be the high speed of adoption by consumers of new mobile finance facilities — particularly those currently without access to any form of banking. Bespoke payment applications for remittance purposes will also be popular but issues around legislation must still be overcome.
The Great Unbanked
The new research identified two exciting sectors:
- The millions of mobile phone users in developing countries who do not currently hold bank accounts or credit cards and would like access to accessible banking services at the right price.
- The millions of mobile phone users in developed countries who cannot currently access financial services due to age i.e. 13-18 year olds.
Legislation issue
Most developed world economies have strict rules and regulation governing the financial industry, to protect both the consumer and the retailer. It can be a costly exercise, in both time and money, to design and implement an alternative MFS payment scheme that adheres to such regulation, particularly the case with mobile fund transfers and remittances potentially offering an easy route to money laundering around the world.
Other key report findings include:
- 612m mobile phone users generating over $587bn worth of financial transactions by 2011
- Annual global mobile banking transactions will rise from 2.7bn in 2007 to 37bn by 2011
- The Far East & China region forecast to embrace mobile finance the most, with over 250m total mobile phone users to use MFS by 2011

Tips on Driving In Europe
June 16, 2008
Driving in Europe isn’t so very different from driving in the U.S. But here are some helpful hints and a few precautions.
1. Choose the optimal time: Fall and spring are the best seasons for a European road trip. With the kids out of school, summer can be crowded, and it’s the Dark Ages all over again during Northern Europe’s cold, gloomy winter.
2. Stick with what you know: The secret to feeling comfortable driving abroad was to rent a car like yours at home. Renters should avoid vehicles with manual transmissions if they aren’t accustomed to driving them. And it always pays to do a little practice driving on small roads before hitting the superhighways.
3. Take heed: After you park your car, before you leave it, make sure you didn’t leave any valuables in sight. Auto break-ins are not uncommon in big cities.

EU suggesting mobile phone users should pay to receive calls
June 16, 2008
European Union telecoms chief Viviane Reding has angered consumers after suggesting mobile phone users should pay to receive calls as well as make them, writes the Daily Mail.
“Despite previous moves to reduce high costs for mobile phone users, the Telecoms Commissioner has done an apparent u-turn by suggesting she would propose that Europeans pay to receive calls - a common practice in the United States, China and Singapore.
Ms Reding is also seeking to reduce the cost of text messaging for Europeans while they are abroad from their home country.”
Currently, consumers who take their handsets overseas can be hit with a bill of up to 19p a minute to take an incoming call.
Now a similar system could be imposed on domestic calls, according to mobile phone industry insiders.
The threat of new charges comes at a time when the mobile industry and the European Commission are locked into a war over high costs.
The Commission supports the change and claims the new charges could be more than off-set by a sharp cut in the cost of making outgoing calls.
